Shockwaves 4th of July Mini Meet - UPDATES

26 Jun 2020 by Nick Freese

Good Morning Shockwaves. The 4th of July 1-mile mini meet is a little over a week away. I just officially measured the course last night with my trusty measuring wheel. The course is officially a 1600m course and not a true mile, which would actually be 1609 meters but don’t worry, if anyone is a real mile aficionado, I will mark the official finish line at 1600 and the true mile at 1609 meters. Your time for the competition will be taken at the 1600 meter mark.

Important details:

I will post the full details this weekend to the event section of the Team App but providing this update to get a jumpstart on requests for parent help for this mini meet.

A quick overview of the race.

Race will start near the Southport Beach house; however, all families should park or drop their runners off at the parking lot on the south end of the Kemper Art Center at 66th and 3rd Ave. The finish line is directly across from what appear to be the church doors of the Kemper center chapel…I didn’t plan this but you might just consider a penitent “thank god or thank goodness I finished” as you cross the finish.

This event is open to all Shockwaves runners, Shockwaves family members and friends. For parents, siblings and friends the option is to run for fun or competitively…we will have 4 age groups:

1- 7 & under
2- 8-11
3- 12-15
4- Older than dirt/Parent Division
(anyone age 16 and up)

During this mini meet, boys and girls will be scored separately and…wait for it…there will be shiny, very shiny medals on the line!

Help we need from parents:

1. Tracking the winner of the first to the quarter mile and first to half mile competition (2 people)

2. Finish line timer and results (2 people)

3. Street art at the half mile—Shannon will provide details but plan is for a group of parents to decorate the street with chalk art inspiration at the half mile mark of the race, which is right at the intersection of 71st and 3rd ave.

4. Traffic control at the intersection of 75th st and 3rd ave.

Let us know if you have Shockwaves family and or friends that plan to run and if you are interested in helping with one of the tasks listed above.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Coach Freese
